The Good

The casting is bold, the storytelling is audacious, and the decision to dispense with Russian accents is an unexpected breath of fresh air.

The Bad

The mishmash of tones and styles can be jarring. Some comedic scenes fall flat, and it's often hard to tell if we're watching dark comedy or dramatic horror.

Bottom Line

Iannucci’s style of deft verbal comedy is transposed into the turmoil of 1950’s Soviet Union with mixed results in a film that is both funny and horrifying. I’ve never seen a movie like this. The stuff that works is great, the rest is frankly unsettling.
